Jika Bumi adalah Buah, dan kita dapat membelahnya menjadi dua, kita akan melihat beberapa lapisan melingkar di dalamnya. Kerak Bumi-lapisan paling luar seperti kulit buah. Tanah di pekaranganmu atau di taman adalah sisi luar kerak, yang tebalnya sekitar 24 sampai 48 km, Kalau kamu menggali tanah dan pasir, pada akhirnya kamu akan bertemu batuan. Sebagian Besar kerak di bawah benua terbuat dari lapisan-lapisan granit. Di tempat-tempat seperti Grand Canyon, di mana air telah mengikis sebagian kerak, lapisan-lapisan granit menjadi terlihat. Di bawah samudera, kerak lebih tipis, tebalnya hanya sekitar 4,5 km di bawah dasar lautan, dan terutama terbuat dari basalt, jenis batu lainnya.
Di bawah kerak terdapat mantel yang sangat tebal, sekitar 2.900 km. Kalau kamu dapat mengemudi mobil dengan kecepatan 80 mil per jam ke dalam terowongan yang dibuat menembus mantel, dibutuhkan 36 jam untuk sampai ke ujungnya.
Namun perjalanan ke pusat bumi mustahil dilakukan, karena panas dan tekanannya terlalu besar.
Para ilmuan tidak tahu banyak tentang mantel yang tersembunyi, tetapi bagian atasnya sepertinya terutama terbuat dari batuan yang disebut peridotit. Peridotit mengandung mineral-mineral seperti olivin, piroksin dan garnet ( batu merah yang kita gunakan dalam perhiasan ). Setidaknya sebagian dari mantel, kata para ilmuan, sangat mudah dibentuk, seperti lilin mainan. Ini karena batuan leleh cair membungkus butiran-butiran batuan padat.
