BANGSA Mesir kuno memeram banyak misteri. Pada sejumlah penggalian situs peninggalan Mesir kuno, ditemukan tanda-tanda yang menunjukan kehebatan peradaban mereka.

Belum lama ini, Newscientist merilis penemuan sebuah tim arkeolog dari Inggris berupa perhiasan logam yang bahan bakunya bukan main, meteorit. perhiasan tersebut berbentuk manik-manik dengan umur yang diperkirakan 5.300 tahun. Seperti penemuan perhiasan pada umumnya, manik-manik ini terpendam dalam pemakaman bangsa Mesir kuno.

Saat meneliti salah satu manik, tim mendapatkan bahwa permukaan manik memiliki kadar nikel yang rendah. Namun, bagian dalamnya mengandung nikel setinggi yang terkandung dalam meteorit. Tim juga menemukan bukti kuat, yakni terhadap struktur kristal khas-dikenal sebagai pola Widmanstatten-yang hanya terbentuk saat besi dan nikel mendingin sangat lambat. Proses itu dijumpai pada meteoroid. Tim menyimpulkan, manik-manik tersebut terbuat dari batu luar angkasa.

Kegiatan peleburan besi sudah dilakukan bangsa Mesir sejak abad ke-6 sebelum Masehi. Besi-besi yang kemudian diolah menjadi perhiasan dipakai oleh masyarakat Mesir yang berstatus sosial tinggi. Pada upacara kematian, perhiasan yang mewah pada zamannya disertakan dalam makam sebagai bekal perjalanan ke alam selanjutnya.
